Why Student mentoringI have observed, both as a student and an academic in the UK, how international students coming for higher education in the UK are often faced with academic challenges such as adapting to learning styles, as well as sociocultural adjustment. In the UK, university students are generally required to produce all course work reports using Academic English. This is indeed the general standard in developed countries. Regrettably, it appears this skill has been lacking in the curriculum of many high schools, colleges and universities outside the western countries. It has also been observed that most of these students lack mentoring which has been proven to aid academic and social excellence in international students in western colleges/universities.
Based on both my personal and shared experience as a Nigerian international student in UK universities at undergraduate, up to doctoral level, and also as a Student Mentor, I found out that many African students (more particularly from Nigeria) would have graduated with better grades if they had earlier been exposed to the western learning styles and opportune to be mentored in the course of their programs in their home country. As a Lecturer/Researcher in a UK university, sadly I still observe that the story of many International students in UK colleges/universities has not really changed for the better. what i'm offering to studentsI will like to propose my independent Academic Mentoring Scheme to prospective students/candidates who will be proceeding to the UK for higher education. My services include online liaison (i.e. telephone, email, WhatsApp, virtual meetings, etc.) with students on the scheme on weekly basis and offering them academic advice, mentoring and tutoring them on how to produce quality academic coursework, seminar, conference and journal papers and how to tackle and pass exams as well as playing the role of a silent/shadow supervisor for their final year projects.
